Meiwa Town in Mie Prefecture was once called "Omigou," a place that actively cultivated hemp centered around the Mito district and the national historic site "Saiku Ruins," and is a "Holy Land of Hemp" with a history of supplying hemp to Ise Shrine.
The Takejinja Shrine in town enshrines Nagashiraha-no-kami, the deity of hemp, and has deep connections with the Shinmatotsukiden Shrine, which offers woven hemp to Ise Shrine.
Based on this historical background and Mie Prefecture's pioneering deregulation of industrial hemp cultivation nationwide, in March 2023, the "Amatsu Sugasa Project" was launched through industry-academia-government collaboration to promote industrial hemp cultivation and utilization, aiming to preserve hemp traditions and create sustainable new industries.
